Interventional radiology (IR), sometimes known as vascular and interventional radiology (VIR), is a medical specialty which provides minimally invasive image-guided diagnosis and procedures in treatment of disease. Although the range of procedures performed by interventional radiologists is broad, the unifying concept behind these procedures is the application of image guidance and minimally invasive techniques in order to minimize risk and discomfort to the patient while achieving an outcome comparable or ahead of open surgery.
It is the most dynamic field in modern medicine which offers an extremely wide range of procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of tumours, Vascular aneurysms malformations, uterine fibroids, life threatening bleeding, vascular access and dialysis, brain aneurysms and vascular malformations etc to name a few.
