When my wife was diagnosed with symptomatic uterine fibroids, the standard recommendation from multiple gynaecologists was surgical: either a myomectomy or, in some cases, a total hysterectomy. Despite presenting with a condition that had a well-established minimally invasive treatment option in the international literature, we were not offered that path — in some consultations, it was actively discouraged. The framing was invariably that surgery was the only serious option. It was only through independent research that we became aware of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) — a procedure performed not by a gynaecologist, but by an interventional radiologist. Interventional radiology is a specialty that most patients will never encounter unless specifically directed to it. It is a discipline that uses imaging guidance to perform precise, minimally invasive procedures from within the body's vascular and tissue architecture — with applications spanning oncology, vascular disease, trauma, and gynaecological conditions including UFE. That we found Dr. Gurucharan Shetty at all was partly the result of a fortunate recommendation, and partly the result of refusing to accept the surgical consensus without further inquiry. Dr. Gurucharan, then at Shankara Hospital, agreed to meet with us and assess whether my wife was a suitable candidate for UFE. What followed was one of the most reassuring medical consultations we had experienced during this period. He explained the mechanism of the procedure in plain terms — the catheter approach, the embolic agents, the effect on fibroid vascularity, and the expected recovery arc. He addressed our concerns directly and without condescension. He made his direct number available and remained reachable throughout the pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure phases. At no point did we feel that questions were unwelcome or that the consultation had a predetermined conclusion. The procedure was performed with evident technical precision. Recovery was manageable and largely as described. More importantly, the outcome has been durable: nearly two years later, my wife is completely symptom-free. The fibroids have not recurred in any symptomatic form. There has been no surgical incision, no extended hospital stay, no impact on uterine integrity. We are documenting this experience publicly because the information gap around UFE — and around interventional radiology more broadly — is significant. Many patients facing fibroid diagnoses are not told this option exists. Some are actively steered away from it. Dr. Gurucharan Shetty represents the kind of specialist who orients his practice around what is best preserved rather than what is most easily removed. We are eternally thankful for his support in my wife's healthcare journey. For anyone facing a similar diagnosis, a consultation with Dr. Gurucharan Shetty is, in our view, an essential step before any surgical commitment is made. Last month I had been to Fortis Hospital on an emergency situation, as I was bleeding profusely from my uterus. There we met the gynecologist and she suggested for scanning. After the scan was complete, Dr. Gurucharan S Shetty was called to look at the scan, he had a focused assessment about the problem. We were then told that there was an injury to the uterine artery, he further suggested a line of procedures to solve the issue. Dr. Gurucharan took it as a challenge to cure me – he was fighting battles on 2 fronts. First to convince my family and second to get ready for technical procedure since it was complicated. I really appreciate his knowledge, skill, enthusiasm and dedication. I can’t thank Dr. Gurucharan for the overall care & support that he provided.
I had continuous bleeding after abortion. Scan in hassan revealed pregnancy products had remained and that they had gone inside uterus. I visited several gynaecologists in hassan, Bangalore all of whom suggested that my uterus has be removed, I have only one child and only 27 yr of age. Finally one radiologist asked me to consult interventional radiologist. We gone to fortis hospital Dr Gurucharan, he said it can be treated without removing uterus by embolize treatment. I undergone treatment, only had pain for one day and bleeding stop completely. Now I am getting normal periods. He has saved my and my family happiness. I am very much thankful.
I was extremely scared after noticing a lump in my left breast. The surgeon asked me to get a breast biopsy done. I have always been scared of needles and felt it would be very painful, but getting the breast biopsy done under Dr Shetty was a completely painless experience. It turned out I was unnecessarily worried as the lump turned out to be not cancer.
My husband had leg swelling and fluid in his stomach. Only the scans in Fortis hospital revealed that one of his main blood vessel had closed. We were referred to Dr Gurucharan. He explained the procedure and its risks and benefits in great detail. Finally we decided to undergo the procedure and a stent was put in the closed blood vessel. My husband got discharged soon and in a few days his leg swelling reduced and also the fluid came down. I am thanks for the correct diagnosis and treatment at Radiology department and specially to Dr Gurucharan.
